Govans Elementary School, part of the Baltimore Curriculum Project (BCP) network of neighborhood conversion charter schools, celebrated American Education Week in November. The week includes visits from school by mothers, fathers, and guardians, community partners, and for the much-anticipated Career Day, a host of adults and mentors representing various jobs.
This year, WJZ-TV broadcast from Career Day with morning news reporter Stephanie Douglas, who also participated in Career Day, sharing her vocation with grades 2 through 5. Watch the coverage.
The American Education Week committee at the school planned a full week of programming for grades 2 through 5, bringing family members to school for special events and inspiring dreams with an array of careers to explore:
Monday, Nov. 17: Reading Day pre-K-2/College Day 3-5 grade.
- In the morning, a volunteer reader came into the Pre-K-2 classrooms to read to students. In grades 3-5, staff wore their college gear and spent time talking about their college experience with students.
Tuesday, Nov. 18: Eat with your child.
- Family members were invited to join their students for lunch at the school.
Wednesday, Nov. 19: Career Day.
- Pre-K- 2 grade students dressed as the career they want to be. 3-5 grade students enjoyed guest speakers coming to the school and sharing information about their careers, including:

- Thanks, Shaq Barrett of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and his foundation Fifty50foundation and Arrayah Ray of Hope Foundation, for donating 600 donuts!
Career Day is the epitome of, ‘Without school, there is no work!’ Our scholars get to see in real time that education is the direct connection between what a solid education and an unstoppable mindset lead to. The students are most fascinated to meet new faces who are actually game changers.
This event is truly the highlight of Education Week. Why else do we push for a more equitable education experience? Clearly, so that we can harvest the fruits of our labor, most profoundly, and with time.
