The Frederick Elementary School (FES) Green Team, the after school environmental club that oversees the school’s garden, has a new school greening initiative: composting. The students are promoting sustainable environmental practices to enhance the soil and plant quality of the FES Teaching Garden by composting from the school’s fruit and vegetable program to reduce waste sent to landfills and FES’s cost of waste removal.

The Green Team students are educating their peers about environmental sustainability and are excited to continue to be environmental stewards for the school. Read more about the Teaching Garden, which the Green Team created last spring.

In addition to composting, the Green Team is beginning to prepare the garden for a summer and fall harvest.  This spring students will begin planting a variety of vegetables, such as zucchini, summer squash, broccoli, bell peppers, kale, lettuce, and cherry tomatoes. FES students can’t wait for warmer weather to plant, read, and just relax in their garden!

In April, the FES 2nd graders took a field trip to Great Kids Farm to participate in activities specifically designed to align with the 2nd grade science unit, “What do Plants Need.” Students experienced three hands-on learning stations: Parts of the Plant; Pollination is Key; Seed Scavenger Hunt. After lunch students had the opportunity to visit with the farm animals where they were able to feed the chickens and pet the goats.
