Over 65 years after they first walked the halls of Pimlico Elementary School, four members of the Class of 1960—Harry Fox, Lois Landsman, Martin Stein, and Donna Wolf—returned to their alma mater for a special visit.
The idea began when Martin Stein reached out to Principal Nneka Warren with a photograph from 1959 of the then fifth-grade class of Ms. Michaelis, a beloved former teacher. “After all these years, about ten of us from that class have reconnected,” Martin shared. “We meet for lunch and reminisce about our days at Pimlico. At our last gathering, we decided to come back and see how the school has changed.”
Principal Warren welcomed the group and shared an overview of her role, the school’s recent progress, and the exciting work happening at Pimlico today. Two current students joined the visit to talk about the many clubs, activities, and supports now available to students.
Academic Coach Keith Tabor then led the alumni on a tour, beginning in the original building—now home to the elementary grades—before heading to the middle school side. The alumni were delighted to see the old gym, now transformed into a bright and inviting library.
Throughout the visit, the former classmates remarked on how vibrant and positive the school felt, praising both the students and staff they met. Before departing, they received some Pimlico swag, which they promised to proudly wear at their next class lunch.
“It was exhilarating to be back in the halls of PS 223,” Martin reflected. “Even though there have been enormous modifications to the facilities, it still felt like home, and from what I could see, it still nurtured an incredible learning environment. Most importantly for me was the integration of the school’s academic progress, coupled with its outreach efforts to the community. The gains that the institution has made over the years could not have been sustained without the full engagement of the community at large. Reaching out to parents and community leaders was a stroke of genius and one that has provided dividends beyond belief.”
Harry was equally as impressed with his school now. “The concept of school and community is very impressive, and it is obvious that the student body has adapted to the philosophy and multi-tier approach to education,” he added. “The ‘old school’ has been updated and expanded to create an environment conducive to learning, growing, and having fun. It was heartwarming to see the smiles and bright faces of the students in the classrooms and hallways. Hats off to Principal Warren and her team!”
The Class of 1960’s return was a heartwarming reminder that once a Pimlico student, always a part of the Pimlico family.
