BCP assumed operation of Hampstead Hill Academy in 2002
when it joined the New Schools Initiative. Hampstead Hill
is a public elementary/middle school that serves 409 students
in grades pre-kindergarten through six. It will expand to
serve students through grade eight by the fall of 2006.
Located just south of Patterson Park, Hampstead Hill’s
student population is approximately 60% white, 23% African-American,
8% Hispanic, 7% Native American and 2% Asian. These students
come from families living below the poverty line as well
as those who earn a middle class wage. Currently 81.7% of
students are eligible for free/reduced price meals.
While the majority of students come from the surrounding
neighborhood, HHA is increasingly serving families opting
to travel to the school from outside its official zone. Currently,
25% of the student body comes from outside the school’s
boundaries, including families selecting HHA through the
Choice Program and an increasing number of non-English speaking
families from the surrounding area.
From 2003-2005 Hampstead Hill's 3rd grade reading and math
scores increased by 126% and 135% respectively. BCP converted
Hampstead Hill into a charter school in 2005.
